Provision of a Queensland 12 Month Recreational Fishing Survey

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) is required to collect recreational fishing statistical data to assist with the sustainable management of Queensland’s fisheries. The purpose of this survey is to collect recreational catch, effort, social, attitudinal and economic information that forms a vital part of the time series data.

The outputs of this survey will be used in future stock and sustainability assessments. Stock assessments require accurate information on all forms of mortality impacting the fish of a stock. Three types of information are typically required for stock assessments—estimates of the total harvest (recreational, commercial and charter), trends through time, and information on the size and age of the fish.

This survey will contribute important quantitative information used to estimate total catch, harvest and effort for all recreationally caught species. It will also contribute accurate spatial and within year temporal information. Information on the size and age of fish harvested by recreational fishers is collected as part of other DAF recreational species monitoring activities.

A key part of fisheries management is managing people and their access to fisheries resources. As such, the social and economic information collected as part of this survey will lead to a better understanding of the human and economic dimension of recreational fishing.
