Next Iconic Walk: Development of Identity and Themes

The Tasmanian Government has committed $40 million to develop a new hut based multi-day walk on Tasmania’s West Coast through the Tyndall Range, between Queenstown and Tullah.

The proposed visitor experience will have a sequence of activities (journey) and functional inclusions and identity and themes that are expressed though the infrastructure’s form, and informational content and mediums. The experience is from first knowledge of the walk through to people’s memories and feelings of involvement.

The Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) seeks to engage a supplier to develop the new walk's identity and themes and the methods for communicating these to vistors. The identity and themes will interpret the area's unique landscape and stories (e.g., Aboriginal, European settlement, and current lives). The contractor will be a team of people/businesses with cultural and interpretive, contextual (e.g., West Coast) and subject (e.g., walking, nature based recreation, tourism) experience; will provide ideas and content; and the means to produce any tangible outputs (directly or by sub-contract). The contractor will work closely with the PWS and other consultants (e.g., architects and engineers) and contractors (e.g., builders) engaged by the PWS though the walk's design, approval and construction/production stages until about 2030.
