Description

The provision of basic healthcare to dependants of ADF members (ADF Dependants) was an initiative of the Commonwealth Government as identified in “Labor’s Plan for Defence”, November 2007.
Since May 2009, a small scale trial has been conducted in 8 primary regional and remote areas plus their Defence outposts.
A final evaluation of the Trial has been completed. As a result, the Trial will become an ongoing national program providing benefits to all ADF Dependants. This will mean that the ADF Family Health Program will be rolled out nationally and be available to all eligible ADF dependants throughout Australia. Based on the Defence Census, the number of eligible ADF Dependants is approximately 71,000.
There are 2 components to the Program:
Allied Health - Eligible ADF Dependants will be able to receive a capped family benefit pro-rated against the number of dependants in the family unit. This benefit is per financial year and can be used to offset the gap cost of Specialist consultations and treatment as well as Allied Health services.
Medical - Eligible ADF Dependants will be able to claim reimbursement for the difference between the Medicare rebate
and the GP’s fee. Eligible services include all Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS) Item Numbers provided for in a general
practice setting.
