Bandy Creek Weir Reinstatement
Details
Description
The Bandy Creek Weir structure is located approximately 5 kilometers north-east of Esperance in the Bandy Creek Boat Harbour facility.
The Weir structure was built in 2010 as part of the Bandy Creek reconstruction works following a major flooding event in 2007, which caused significant damage to the previous Weir structure and saw a large volume of sand deposited into the boat harbour, trapping boats in their pens.
The Weir is a vital piece of infrastructure for the area and serves the following functions:
- To control sediment deposition/erosion activity in the harbour caused by large runoff during extended rain or storm events, thereby mitigating the risk of vessels being trapped in their pens by minimising sediment build up in the boat harbor;
- To maintain a suitable water level in the creek upstream to protect the RAMSAR wetlands;
- Emergency access road for vehicles and pedestrians; and
- Utility corridor for water, sewerage (transfer line) and Telstra’s communication lines.
The Bandy Creek Weir was overtopped on 11 February 2017 and experienced substantial damage following a flooding event.
Tenders are invited for the construction works to reinstate a weir at this location.
