Description

It is estimated that Australian grain growers spend an extra $8.24/ha to control herbicide resistant weeds, over $187M per annum. Understanding the extent of herbicide resistance across the Australian grain and cotton growing regions is a critical basis for subsequent resistance investment and awareness. Random national herbicide resistance benchmarking surveys allows a broad and complete picture of herbicide resistance. It also provides the opportunity for emerging resistance issues to be identified early.

The proposed investment will utilise exciting collaborations with the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) and the Analytics for the Australian Grains Industry (AAGI) to deliver a national survey to collect and collate data on weed species distribution and frequency as well as herbicide resistance status across grain and cotton farming systems efficiently and effectively. This investment will involve collaboration with AAGI in the creation of the national resistance baseline visualization tool, providing an exciting opportunity to map and disseminate the survey data in a new and accessible way.

GRDC’s strategic partnership, Analytics for the Australian Grains Industry (AAGI), is available as an in-kind GRDC contribution to this investment. To access support toward this collaboration, please discuss with AAGI directly and describe the scope and support requested from AAGI in your submission. Please make enquiries to Curtin University, attention Prof. Mark Gibberd, at [email hidden]. This will significantly increase the awareness of herbicide resistance by growers and agronomists in their locality and be utilised to promote adoption of timely and effective herbicide resistance management strategies.
