Rottnest Island Authority
Construction of West End Stage 2 Landscape and Civil Works
Details
Description
The West End is the western most point of the Island and hosts several significant environmental, recreation and historical sites. The West End is a place of reflection and learning about the environment, the aboriginal cultural heritage and human endeavours. The full force of the Indian Ocean is felt on the West End and the powerful ocean, cliffs and ruggedness is an attraction to many visitors.
The Island is referred to as Wadjemup by traditional Aboriginal people from the Noongar language group. As custodians of the land the Whadjuk people have strong spiritual connections to Wadjemup and it remains significant to Aboriginal culture both locally and nationally.
Wadjemup is culturally significant to many Aboriginal communities across the State and the nation. Local Aboriginal people regard the West End of Wadjemup as a particularly significant site, likened to a heaven. The site is referred to, as ‘Koorinup’ by the Noongar people. The old people tell a story of how the spirits of the Noongar people come to rest after death. Their spirits are said to be wandering until they find their place of rest.
The West End is a place where the journey ends and begins
- reach the shores
- a place for quiet reflection and learning
- rest and find serenity, inspiration and strength to leap ahead
- learn about the creation story of Koorinup and how the spirits of the Noongar people come to rest after death
- watch wildlife over the waters, on the rocks, in the sky
- explore several walking trails
- immerse in the wind and gaze out over the ocean expanse for glimpses of the bygone sails.
Rottnest Island Authority has progressed plans for the redevelopment of this key recreation and visitor site. The objective is to upgrade the transport infrastructure and public amenity to provide an enhanced visitor experience at the West End. The original toilet block at West End has already been decommissioned and rebuilt as part of Phase 1 of this project.
The scope of works associated with this design and construct contract is the finalization of design, and construction of the new transport hub, visitor amenity and integrated public artwork at the West End as described in the RFT Documents.
