The removal of the contaminated concrete from the surface and joints of the bund is required to repair the joint sealant and the integrity of the concrete. Due to the extent and depth of the hydrocarbon penetration, the affected slabs will require substantial removal and replacement with sound, hydrocarbon free concrete.

Tank TK-6 is to be bunded off with a temporary bunding to maintain secondary protection for this tank. Tanks TK-4 and TK-5 will need to be temporarily decommissioned and all pipe supports, piping infrastructure and other elements temporarily removed to allow for the slab remediation.

Demolition of the concrete will require disposal in a suitable facility, which must be confirmed by the contractor through aromatic, aliphatic and PFAS sampling. The demolition should include the stormwater sump and all slab components in the area.

Following successful demolition, detailed earthworks may be required to correct any levels, etc. which may have been disturbed during demolition or may have been incorrect, causing the original slab ponding. The slab can then be reinstated with a traditionally reinforced slab or fibre reinforced concrete if preferred. Once the slab is effectively cured, the joints can be sealed, and a protective coating of Nitocote EP410 applied to the slab surface. The piping can then be reinstated and the temporary bunding removed.

Testing is required at various stages throughout the delivery stage of the project to confirm contamination levels, construction quality and efficacy of the works undertaken.
