Description
The Department of Environment and Science has committed $800,000 for the construction and deployment of one (1) new artificial reef to be constructed in Queensland waters by mid-December 2018.
The new artificial reef (North Stradbroke Island (NSI) Artificial Reef) will be constructed in waters off North Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay Marine Park.
The reef will consist of a number of free standing, complex reef modules deployed in defined clusters within a defined permit area. The Department of Environment and Science has applied for and been granted a tidal works development approval for the site. The reef modules must be suitable for multiple uses such as line fishing, spear fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving.
North Stradbroke Island artificial reef will be constructed from complex medium profile purpose built reinforced concrete reef modules that are between 3 and 5 metres in height (preference for the higher height). Individual modules should typically weigh between 10 and 25 tonnes.
