In May 2007 a contract was signed to deliver a single carrier WPSS to support APEC Leaders’ Week events in August 2007.
The WPSS capability was formally activated on 1 August 2007.The current capability provides WPSS access for up to 1000 users via the Global System for Mobile communications network. The WPSS provides priority connectivity to the mobile telecommunications network for a pre-determined list of key public safety and emergency response personnel at the Commonwealth, State and Territory Government levels.
The Attorney-General's Department wishes to establish a Wireless Priority Service System (WPSS) feasibility study to determine the financial and technical feasibility of a multiple carrier WPSS within the Australian mobile telephony sector.
