North East Water
Benalla - Loombah Dam - Seepage Weirs Reinstatement - D&C
Details
Description
North East Water (NEW) own and operate Loombah Dam, an earth and rockfill dam with a central concrete core wall located on Ryans Creek. The dam, in conjunction with McCall Say Dam located upstream, is used as a raw water storage for the township of Benalla.
The dam, constructed circa 1945, features a dry intake tower connected to a 10’ (3 m) diameter tunnel through the dam, which contains a 12” (300 mm) DICL and 18” CI (450 mm) outlet pipes. The tunnel and tower are accessible from the downstream toe of the dam.
NEW seek to reinstate seepage monitoring system, which is not currently recorded, such that piping failure modes can be monitored. It is therefore proposed to install two V-notch weirs to capture and monitor seepage through the embankment and along the outlet tunnel.
