Rottnest Island Authority New Public Ablutions Building Stage 1 West End

The West End is the western most point of the Island and hosts several significant environmental, recreation and historical sites. The West End is a place of reflection and learning about the environment, the aboriginal cultural heritage and human endeavours. The full force of the Indian Ocean is felt on the West End and the powerful ocean, cliffs and ruggedness is an attraction to many visitors.

The project objective is to implement initiatives outlined in the Rottnest Island Management Plan RIMP 2020-24 of which The West End Upgrade project is a key initiative. The project will provide enhanced visitor experience and amenity; and further reveal to visitors the outstanding natural, Aboriginal cultural heritage and built heritage features of the West End.

The site is proposed to be developed in a staged approach. Stage 1 (this request) is the construction of public amenities building, including all associated civil, drainage, waste water disposal, and landscaping works.

An east–west orientated sandy dune limits the south of the West End site, an existing road defines the east. While the dune provides some shelter from southerly winds, the West End is extremely exposed to strong westerly winds and salt spray. Low vegetation and landform to the north, east and west leaves the site exposed visually and to the elements. Durable, corrosion-resistant and aesthetically sympathetic design is critical.
