Description
The PTA is responsible for the planning and delivery of the associated Transport Infrastructure for the State Government’s proposed new Perth Stadium on the Burswood peninsula. The State Government of Western Australia is planning a new 60,000 to 70,000 seat major sports stadium and sports precinct at Burswood, Western Australia. An upgrade of the existing transport infrastructure in the area of the sports precinct is planned to occur concurrently with the stadium development to cater for the increase in patronage resulting from the proposed development. The components of the transport infrastructure upgrade that are covered are:
a) Construction of two additional rail platforms and enlargement of the existing central platform at the Belmont Park Station which will become the new Perth Stadium Station.
b) Duplication, and in places triplication, of the existing Armadale line dual track railway plus associated track realignment, between the Goongoongup Rail Bridge (GRB) and the Burswood Station. The length of track duplication is approximately 1.9 km, from chainage 1220 to 3100. The duplication is partly within the existing rail corridor.
To facilitate timely and cost-effective construction of the project, a program of forward works is planned. The forward works will include ground improvement, placement of fill to widen part of the existing railway embankment and to raise the formation level. The fill is expected to cause significant settlement as a result of compression of an underlying stratum of alluvial silt and clay referred to as Swan River Alluvium (SRA).
