Sand Replenishment Program - Whyalla Foreshore
Details
Description
The Whyalla Foreshore Sand Replenishment Program is an initiative of the Whyalla Council, supported by the Coastal Protection Board of South Australia.
Based on surveyed data and current best practice initiatives to maintain our beach-side assets long term, a strategy has been developed to relocate offshore sand reserves, and bring them up onto the Whyalla Foreshore beach, where they will be placed against the new sea wall.
The project involves harvesting sand deposited adjacent to the breakwater of the marina and the offshore sand lobe, located approximately 500 - 900 metres from shore, at the Whyalla Foreshore.
The aim of this project is to collect the sand from these sites and deposit it along the newly completed sea wall, sloping down towards the sea, to help protect Council's assets, including the sea wall, and the stairs and ramps that extend beyond it.
This project will result in a slightly steeper beach, extending to the sea.
