Description

Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, Australian Government agencies are required to ensure information and services are provided in a non-discriminatory accessible manner. All governmental websites are therefore required to meet WCAG standards in respect of this requirement. WCAG is a technical standard developed under the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

The Department has successfully implemented text to speech software over the past year on the Department of Health’s main website, www.health.gov.au. Reports have demonstrated that this software has been successful in providing an additional accessibility service for users.

The Department wishes to extend its use of text to speech software to all websites within the DoHA portfolio. A minimum of 54 websites, in addition to intranets, E-Learning modules and blogs.
