Description
A review of the final report from FAR2403-001SAX NGN- Winter wheat investigation on the Southcoast of WA has presented a number of questions with local growers in the Albany Port Zone to investigate earlier sowing times for commercially available winter wheat varieties. Results from the previous investment highlighted some interesting trends regarding the contribution of grain from secondary tillers in both winter wheat varieties and spring barley varieties. There is a need to continue this investigation over a 2-year period to determine if this is a common occurrence. With the trend continuing towards earlier sowing dates to either satisfy large hectare programs or to take advantage of late summer rainfall utilising some winter wheat varieties as an addition to more common spring wheat varieties could allow growers to take advantage of the conditions when they can. There is also a need to provide comparisons between different cereal crops including barley and oats to provide rotational diversity in the area.
