Description
The Berri Barmera Council own, operates and maintains approximately 986 kilometres of local road network, comprising of both sealed and unsealed roads. This road network plays a critical role in supporting local communities, agricultural activities, tourism, freight movement and regional connectivity across the Council area.
Each financial year, Council receives funding through the Australian Government Roads to Recovery Program, which is aimed at improving the accessibility, safety and condition of local roads. Council applies this funding to the renewal and upgrade of priority road assets in accordance with its Asset Management Plans and condition assessments.
As part of the current Roads to Recovery Program, Council has nominated McDonald Road, Barmera and Gillespie Road, Barmera for reconstruction works. Both roads are currently unsealed and have reached a condition where ongoing maintenance in no longer effective or economical. To improve safety, durability and serviceability, Council intends to reconstruct these roads with new pavement material and apply a spray seal treatment, converting them to sealed roads.
