Detailed Design, Forts Junction Hub Upgrade, Magnetic Island

The Customer, the Department of Environment and Science (DES), is seeking a suitably qualified Principal Contractor (PC) to be responsible for, and manage the preparation of design, specifications and contract administration documentation for all building, associated engineering, equipment, and services reticulation associated with the Forts Junction Hub Upgrade Project.

The Forts are widely accepted as the number one tourist attraction on the island - upgraded in 2013/14, current visitor numbers are approximately 100,000 per annum. The Forts Junction Hub is currently the only access point to the Forts Complex and is also a key link in the track network.

The overall scope of this project is to upgrade the Forts Junction to a fit-for-purpose facility to provide appropriate access to this important tourist destination, provide substantially safer pedestrian and vehicle access; increased parking capacity and bus servicing facilities at the primary access / entry point to the Forts walk; improve the connectivity of this important site with the islands walking track network; and provide a hub for the National Park

Located at the intersection of Horseshoe Bay and Radical Bay Roads, Magnetic Island, the current carpark is informal and is not large enough for the current amount of use. It forms part of the intersection of the Horseshoe Bay and Radical Bay roads and also includes public bus stops. Traffic and pedestrian safety are increasing issues. The tenure covers both DES and Townsville City Council (TCC) responsibilities and both agencies are working together to progress this project.
