Australian War Memorial
Exhibition Design Services
Details
Description
The Memorial has an active program of exhibitions which are all managed by the Exhibitions Section within the Public Programs branch. From October 2009 to October 2014, the Memorial may develop new permanent, temporary, and travelling exhibitions, as well as small displays and refurbishment of existing displays. Design services related to these exhibitions may be outsourced.
The Memorial is seeking to establish a Panel for Design Services that includes designers with demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:
a) architectural and exhibition design;
b) exhibition design (includes 3D and Graphic design);
c) graphic design;
d) set piece design; and
e) design of discrete exhibition infrastructure, including showcases and/or object supports and/or conservation mannequins and/or realistic mannequins.
Tenders will need to identify which of the above area/s of specialisation they wish to be considered for, and will be assessed accordingly against the evaluation criteria. NB. Tenders selecting a) architectural and exhibition design will require demonstrated expertise in architectural services to develop new or modify existing base building structures to house exhibitions, along with exhibition design services.
The Panel will be effective for a five-year period, from October 2009 until October 2014, with the possibility of extension or review. The Memorial reserves the right to procure outside of the Panel, and can amend the Panel at any time. The Memorial will not guarantee work to successful tenderers.
After the Panel is formed, Panel members may be sent a Design Brief for a particular project and either invited to quote as part of a competitive process, or be offered a set fee for service proposal. Each project will require a separate contract to cover the specific service and delivery requirements of that particular project.
Planned exhibitions
The Memorial’s forward exhibition program as at 2009 includes the development of a range of permanent, temporary and travelling exhibitions. The development of these exhibitions is dependent on funding being made available. A summary of exhibition development or refurbishment that may occur during the period October 2009 to October 2014, in no particular order, is below. The listed developments may involve one or more of the areas of specialisation detailed above.
Permanent exhibitions
• Redevelopment of the Hall of Valour;
• Redevelopment of the First World War galleries;
• Redevelopment of the Orientation gallery;
• Redevelopment of the Research Centre;
• Refurbishment of permanent displays and galleries; and
• Development of small displays.
Temporary and Travelling exhibitions
On the ground level of the Memorial is a Special Exhibitions Gallery (SEG), of approximately 360 square metres, dedicated to the display of both Temporary and Travelling exhibitions. The Memorial may develop between two and four exhibitions annually for this space.
Exhibition content ranges from 2D (drawing on the Photography and/or Art collections), to 3D (including relics and technology and other mixed collection). Both 2D and 3D exhibitions can include audio-visual programs.
Temporary and travelling exhibitions will often include a catalogue which will be noted in the project scope of the design brief.
At the present time, the majority of exhibitions are Travelling, and will commonly tour nationally over several years. Consultants should demonstrate an understanding of the special design considerations specific to a travelling exhibition.
Modified Travelling exhibitions
Travelling exhibitions are sometimes reproduced as a “Modified exhibition” to travel to small, regional or remote venues. These exhibitions do not require the security or environmental conditions needed for display of valuable museum collection material. Modified exhibitions and are a smaller, simplified exhibition which typically consists of between 5 and 10 graphic components, and some supporting objects. A Modified exhibition may form part of a Travelling Exhibition Design Brief, or be managed under a separate contract.
