The waste management issues facing rural South Australia are different to those encountered in metropolitan Adelaide. The smaller quantities of waste produced, waste types, seasonal trends, dispersed population centres, transport distances, proximity to markets, financial costs and many other factors pose particular challenges for rural municipalities. In order to develop suitable waste management policies, strategies and programmes in rural areas an improved understanding of waste issues is required. It is envisaged that this study will provide valuable information to improve and assist the management of waste in rural areas.
