Description

The Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme is administered by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA). The Scheme seeks to recognise the harm and trauma experienced by Stolen Generations survivors who were removed from their families or communities in the Northern Territory or the Australian Capital Territory before self-government, and the Jervis Bay Territory.

The Scheme opened on 1 March 2022 and will close on 30 June 2026. Applications are open between 1 March 2022 and 28 February 2026.

A Personal Acknowledgement is one of three elements of redress available under the Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme. It is an opportunity for survivors to have their story about their removal and its impacts acknowledged by a senior government official (senior representative) and receive a personalised and genuine acknowledgement of the resulting harm and trauma.Survivors can choose to have a Personal Acknowledgement face-to-face with a senior representative, in writing from a senior representative or both. Written Personal Acknowledgements have been immensely meaningful to survivors and provide something tangible that survivors can keep and show their loved ones. As such, it is important that Written Personal Acknowledgements are well presented, protected and preserved. This includes the option of professional framing of Written Personal Acknowledgements in letter form based on survivor preference as an opt-in process. The NIAA requires various framing options for survivors to choose from, including the choice of the frame colour and mat board, along with the option to include add-ons as requested by the survivor (e.g. photographs). The NIAA also requires multiple standard and custom sized frames, as length of the Written Personal Acknowledgements will vary as they are individualised and based on each survivor's wishes. This reflects the Personal Acknowledgement principle of providing choice to survivors wherever possible.
