QLD Department of Agriculture and Fisheries
Apple Market Assessment: Kalei and 110 apple varieties
Details
Description
The State of Queensland acting through Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has a history of involvement in fruit and vegetable breeding programs to provide better varieties to industry and consumers.
Where new varieties developed are deemed suitable for commercialisation, the department seeks a Licensee to manage the new varieties, for example through arranging propagation of material for planting, managing growers and marketers, for the benefit of Queensland. It is important that the department makes the decision to commercialise based on an accurate assessment of the market, to ensure that growers will be interested in planting and maintaining the varieties, that wholesalers and retailers are interested in selling the produce, and that there is consumer demand.
The department has developed two apple varieties:
• ‘Kalei’, RS103-130 (Australian PBR 2005/278; US Plant Patent PP20,028)
• ‘110’, RS103-110 (Australian PBR 2013/115; US Plant patent 29,089).
