Berri Barmera Council
Road Reconstruction, Lyrup Road
Details
Description
Lyrup Road, located in Monash within the Berri Barmera Council region, experienced significant damage during the 2022–2023 flood events. The prolonged saturation and elevated groundwater levels caused substantial cracking and failure along the road shoulders, particularly within the embankment zones. As a result, sections of the existing formation became unstable, leading to compromised pavement performance and reduced safety for road users. Importantly, Lyrup Road forms the primary access route to the Lyrup township via the Lyrup Ferry, making the road a critical link for residents, local businesses, and service providers.
To address these issues, Tonkin Consulting has prepared a detailed reconstruction design for approximately 330 metres of Lyrup Road, encompassing repairs to the damaged embankment, rehabilitation of the shoulder and pavement, and upgrades to drainage infrastructure. The design includes removal of unsuitable and failed materials, installation of engineered fill, reinstatement of the traffic lanes and unsealed shoulders, and construction of new culvert structures and headwalls where required.
The reconstruction adopts a robust earthworks specification, incorporating subgrade verification, benching into the existing embankment, placement of Type A engineered fill, and installation of a compacted clay facing layer to improve embankment stability and mitigate future erosion risks. Vegetation removal, batter reinstatement, and topsoil and revegetation treatments are also included to restore the surrounding environment after construction activities.
Given the essential role of Lyrup Road in providing reliable access to the ferry crossing and the Lyrup community, this project will restore the structural integrity and safety of the route while improving its resilience to future extreme weather events.
