Description
It is proposed that a service for independent observer coverage for the Sardine Fishery is contracted. The current level of observer coverage in the fishery is 30% of net-sets, this is implemented through observing 30% of fishing nights/trips (which is approximately 220 nights, and an additional 30 nights in the West Coast), by having an observer on board for 3 of every 10 trips with no more than 2 consecutive trips having an observer present. This ensures the coverage is evenly spread over the effort throughout the year and is reflective of the level of fishing effort. The level of coverage is subject to Ministerial approval and may change. The contractor undertakes the observer coverage on behalf of PIRSA Fisheries. The coverage provides independent information on the rates of interactions and the effectiveness of the Code of Practice. This is reported in a public annual report and quarterly data summary for consideration by the TEPS Working Group. The fundamental purpose of the observer program is to provide fisheries managers, research organisations, environmental agencies, the fishing industry and the wider community with independent, reliable, verified and accurate information on the fishing activities and practices for vessels operating in the Sardine Fishery.
