Project C: Enabling analytics for grain crop monitoring applications - Spatial quantification of frost damage during vegetative and reproductive phases in wheat and barley.

This procurement is part of a tender consisting of five interrelated procurements. Applicants may apply for one, all or any combination of the ‘Enabling analytics for grain crop monitoring applications’ procurements listed. For further information visit: https://grdc.com.au/research/applying-and-reporting/current-procurement/open-tenders.

Frost is estimated to cause losses of $400m annually to the Australian grains industry. Knowing when a crop has been frosted and how severely can impact the decision to graze crops or cut for hay. The timeliness of such decisions is key to avoiding total crop losses and mitigating the financial impact of frost events. Remote sensing tools for the rapid spatial quantification of frost damage could help Australian growers (and their advisors) to understand the impact of frost on yield spatially. The tools to rapidly, remotely and spatially measure frost damage during reproductive phases provides information on financial exposure and immediate mitigation options (Faulkner 2017). The application of such tools following stem frosts during vegetative phases is also of high importance given the potential impact on yield and input cost optimisation following stem frosts, as well as the difficulty associated with identifying it in-crop.
