Data Protection Software (CommVault Simpana 10) and Additional Services

The Public Transport Authority (“PTA”) has established the Data Protection Optimisation and Infrastructure Refresh Project to address data protection challenges. It will provide the PTA with enhanced technology and business capabilities for protection of its valuable data assets.

The PTA currently uses an OEM version of CommVault Simpana 9 (Hitachi Data Protection Suite) provided by Hitachi Data Systems as part of the procurement of the Hitachi Storage Array Network (“SAN”). The OEM licence is for the same software but it is attached to specific hardware (in this case, the Hitachi SAN).

With the recent replacement of the Hitachi SAN with an EMC SAN, the PTA’s continuing use of the Hitachi OEM version of CommVault Simpana 9 is in doubt beyond the expiry of the current software maintenance and support agreement in July 2014.

A comprehensive identification and analysis of the PTA’s options for data protection hardware, software and professional services was undertaken as part of the Project’s Project Definition Stage. This included an extensive scan of the market for data protection software to assess value-for-money and fitness-for-purpose of current offerings.

On the basis of this market scan which included detailed assessment and analysis, the PTA has identified an upgrade to CommVault Simpana 10 as its data protection solution. This

• provides the opportunity to take advantage of new standard functionality of best-of-breed solution for data protection;
• enables the PTA to have software to be configured to meet its specific environment and needs;
• allows PTA to take advantage of significant advances in recent data protection software; and,
• permits the PTA to adopt a hardware independent data protection design.

To enable procurement of CommVault Simpana 10, exemption from the requirement to purchase from CUA13010 has been granted, it has been named as a proprietary product and approval has been given for a limited tender.

This limited tender is restricted to resellers of CommVault Simpana 10 in the WA market. The requirement for supply of CommVault Simpana version 10 and additional services including design, implementation services, training and support is outlined in Book 4 - Scope of Services & Specification of this Tender. The CommVault Part Numbers for individual services have been confirmed with CommVault to assist respondents to the Tender.
