Petroleum Data Transcription Services

Exploration for petroleum in Western Australia started in the late 1950’s and has continued until the present day. Data from petroleum exploration has been submitted to the Government as part of the legislative requirements since the 1960’s and it has been the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s (DMP) role to manage this data and release the data back to industry to encourage further efficient exploration of the State. Seismic data is the prime tool for petroleum exploration and approximately 138,050 linear kilometres has been shot onshore in Western Australia and a further 37,000 linear kms shot in the State waters off Western Australia. Seismic generates large volumes of data and represents 98% of the tape storage held by the Department, most of which was generated during the 1980’s boom exploration period in the Perth, Carnarvon and Canning Basins. The data has been submitted on the media and format of the day it was acquired, and the majority of data stored with the Government is mainly on 9-track tapes that are currently degrading and is now obsolete technology.
DMP’s past and current policy of being able to quickly supply such data to explorers is both nationally and internationally applauded and is recognised as a key function in attracting petroleum explorers to Western Australia. Therefore, the transcription of data from deteriorating media to a modern stable media is seen as a crucial operation for both Industry and Government.
The purpose of this tender is to identify a panel of contractors who can supply transcription services to GSWA for a possible period of two years.
