Description

The Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) is inviting Offers from suitably qualified and experienced Respondents for the demolition and replacement of the existing Level 1 rooftop garden at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH). The garden is located between the Burns and Oncology wards.

The primary objective of the Telethon Burns and Oncology Rooftop Garden Project (Project) is to deliver a?safe, interactive, engaging play-based and therapeutic garden?that enhances the well-being of children in a hospital setting. The space has been designed to:

  • Support play and interaction?– The garden provides a variety of play opportunities suitable for children of different ages and abilities.
  • Maintain a therapeutic and calming environment?– The landscaping and design contributes to a sense of relaxation and recovery.
  • Ensure safety and accessibility?– The space complies with all regulatory safety standards, accessibility requirements, and durability needs for a healthcare setting.
  • Retain key functional elements?–The space includes designated play zones, seating for families, shaded areas, and greenery.

The Project is located on Level 1 between Wards 1A (Oncology) and 1B (Burns) at PCH. The existing Level 1 rooftop garden was built during the construction of PCH in 2016/2017 as an outdoor play space for the immunocompromised and vulnerable children on these wards. The existing garden includes shade structures, concrete seating nooks and a small number of plants and trees.

CAHS has the opportunity to enhance this garden area to better support patient use, including wheelchair access and play-based activities. Improvements will address the current undulating surface, the condition of the space, the design of the perforated shade canopies, and the use of small stones as flooring, to create a safer and more functional outdoor environment.

This will provide outdoor play access for children with varying degrees of ability during their oncology, haematology and burns treatments. As it currently stands, PCH does not have a suitable and safe outdoor space that Burns, and Oncology patients can utilise.

Extensive consultation with key stakeholders has occurred resulting in an informed design that meets the project’s intent of a 750sqm interactive play-based and therapeutic outdoor space.
