Airport Terminal Building Upgrade

The Terminal and Administration buildings were originally constructed in 1985.The terminal building and adjacent car park area were designed to cater for the then aircraft traffic movements, with up to 30 people utilising the service at one time.

The terminal building was refurbished in 1993, just after ownership of the airport was passed the Whyalla Council, however, no allowance was made at the time to increase the size of the terminal.

Over the last four years, we have seen passenger numbers grow at approximately 20% per year, from 35,000 passengers to an estimated value of just under 75,000 in the 2006/07 financial year.With flights being mirrored upto three times a day, up to 50 passengers can be arriving and departing at any one time, making the current terminal waiting room extremely crowded and uneffect.

This increased loading has caused undue stress on the existing and car parking area.In 2005, the car park was doubled in size to cater for the increased usage.It is now time to upgrade the to cater for the ever increasing traffic throughput.Under a separte contract, asbestos from both the terminal and administrations buidling were reemoved, as well as the total demolition of the administration building.

Scheduling of the Works will need to be carefully considered to ensure minimal disruption is caused to the traveling public.

The is a under the Aviation Transport Security Act 2004 and Regulations 2005, and as such access to restricted areas will need to be strictly controlled.This will included both terminal users as well as contractors undertaken the redevelopment works.As the terminal building will be in operation during the works, work areas will need to be secured and screened off from the public during renovations.
