Description

The Platypus Waterholes Walk is a 4.5 kilometre walk from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre (Kangaroo Island) across Black Swamp to the Rocky River. Bushfires in December 2007 destroyed the majority of built infrastructure, signage and interpretive elements. The area has regenerated strongly since that time. Bridges and boardwalks have already been repaired and/or replaced allowing the precinct to be reopened to walkers along with the adjacent Rocky River Hike.

The project will comprise:
1. The installation of 4 viewing platforms and a lookout at various locations along the walk;
2. Associated balustrading , screening and signage/interpretation frameworks;
3. Installation of way finding interpretive signage; and
4. Upgrading of the Walking Trail Information Shelter (Black Swamp Lookout) may be undertaken as additional works either in conjunction with this project or at a later date should funding be available.

All elements have been subject to engineering scrutiny and input. Alternative materials that provide a longer life and lower maintenance regime have been included in the specifications.
