Construction of the Refurbishment & Maintenance Facility - Nowergup Depot Upgrade Project

Details

Description

The Nowergup Depot was constructed in 2004 to service 31 B-Series railcars (three (3) car sets). Since then, a further 37 railcars have been added to the fleet to meet demand on the Joondalup and Mandurah lines, bringing the total B-Series railcars (three (3) car sets) to 68.

In 2016 an order for an additional 10 B-Series railcars was placed to service the new Forrestfield-Airport link, increasing the fleet size to 78, with deliveries of such scheduled to commence from September 2017. The subsequent increase in the B-Series fleet size will see the existing inspection and maintenance capabilities at the Nowergup Depot near capacity, requiring the PTA to sought alternate facilities to refurbish and maintain new and existing railcars.

In association with the construction of the Bellevue Bogie Transfer Facility, a decision has been made to upgrade the existing Nowergup Depot to accommodate the increased maintenance activities, as well as the upcoming B-Series mid-life refurbishment, in meeting demand on the urban passenger rail network.
