WA Department of Water
Canning River Oxygenation Plant, Ferndale, 6148, WA
Details
Description
Design, construction and commissioning of a side stream super-saturation oxygenation plant at Nicholson Road Bridge, Ferndale. The Canning River Oxygenation program began in 1997 as a trial supported by the Swan Canning Cleanup Program and the Coast and Clean Seas Program and has evolved to become an integral component in maintaining and improving the ecological health of the Canning River through the Swan River Trust’s Healthy Rivers Action Plan (2008).
Two oxygenation plants are in operation, and are located upstream of the Kent Street weir at Bacon Street, Wilson and Camsell Way, Ferndale and effectively oxygenate a 2 km stretch of the river. This stretch of the upper Canning River is impounded seasonally by the Kent Street weir, which is installed during the low-flow months of late spring, summer and much of autumn and reduces the intrusion of salt water from the estuary. The stretch acts as a weir pool, and it is during this time there is a need for artificial oxygenation.
