Description

The South Solitary Island Lighthouse is located approximately 9nm north east of Coffs Harbour and underwent a refurbishment in 2019. As part of the refurbishment project a portion of the pavilion building roof sheeting was removed to allow access for coating works. Upon removal it was discovered that the roof sheeting, flashing and components of its structure were in poor condition and require repair/replacement. Identified issues include:

The roof sheeting has severe corrosion in the lap joints and many redundant holes

The lead flashing/gutters have become brittle and has numerous holes

The timber structure has splitting in the battens and a number of damaged rafters.

Fragments of asbestos cement sheeting were also located in the roof cavity and require removal to allow the works to be completed safely.

In addition to above during the refurbishment coating works it was discovered that the ground floor coatings still have lead paints present despite records indicating prior removal of the lead paint.

AMSA now proposes to undertake a project to replace the pavilion building roof sheeting and flashing, repair the roof structure and remove the remaining lead paints from the ground floor.
