Description

Tenders are being sought from suitably qualified consultants who wish to be considered for the provision of a comprehensive scientific and engineering study of the Old Tailings Dam at the Savage River Mine. Oxidation of pyrite in the tailings has resulted in streams of acid rock drainage that seep from the dam wall. This study should ultimately provide sufficient information to allow the Savage River Rehabilitation Project (SRRP) to develop a strategy for the long-term management of the dam and to measure the success or otherwise of any acid drainage remediation programs. The study will include the investigation of both surface and ground water hydrology and chemistry; oxidation development, progression and geochemistry; acid drainage generation and solute transport; dam stability; and long-term management and closure. The study will also include a drilling, sampling and testing program. The SRRP involves the remediation of historical acid drainage sources on the Savage River Mine site and is a joint venture between the Department and Australian Bulk Minerals.
