Description

The service, currently referred to as the National Early Intervention Service (NEIS) will provide free, evidence-based mental health support to people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, mild mental ill-health or transient distress. The NEIS will be a fully digital mental health service.

From 1 January 2026, a service provider will commence delivering the NEIS and provide:

  • Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LiCBT), delivered by skilled and trained professionals, via phone or video
  • a curated set of free, evidence-based online tools and resources for people able and willing to try self-guided support.

Once it reaches maturity in 2029, the NEIS is expected to support more than 150,000 people each year. The NEIS will be implemented through a staged roll-out, expanding its service capacity over three years.

The NEIS will require a workforce to deliver LiCBT and a technology solution to support the service delivery including web access, user and practitioner portals, client records, workforce management, content management systems, and telehealth platforms.
