PAR-21844 - Fishery Independent Monitoring Surveys (FIMS) 2025
Details
Description
FIMS aims to provide spatially explicit fishery-independent catch rate estimates of both legal and undersized (pre-recruit) rock lobsters.
The FIMS design consists of five (5) surveys totaling twenty-nine (29) transects, running from inshore (~10m depth) to offshore (~120m depth) grounds.
Lobster pots are set on predetermined locations on day one (1) and hauled in the following day with catch and biological data recorded. Data is used to provide spatially explicit fishery-independent catch rate estimates of both legal and undersized (pre-recruit) rock lobsters which are compared to those from fishery-dependent logbook sources. Lobsters are tagged and returned to the water unharmed during this process.
The data attained is required as part of the stock assessment of the fishery which is presented annually to PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture as part of the total allowable commercial catch setting process.
Surveys will be conducted twice, once prior to the season opening and once mid-season
