EMHS Provision of Royal Perth Hospital Art Murals

East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) is embarking on a transformative project to
enrich the environment of Royal Perth Hospital through the creation of a vibrant and
culturally significant wall mural.

EMHS is seeking proposals from Aboriginal artists to contribute their unique
perspectives and artistic talents to this endeavour. Within Western Australia, the term
Aboriginal is used in preference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, in recognition
that Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of Western Australia. This language
is reflected within this brief. No disrespect is intended to our Torres Strait Islander
community. The mural will serve as a celebration of Aboriginal culture, resilience, and
healing, enhancing the hospital's atmosphere and promoting a sense of connection and
belonging for patients, visitors, and staff. It will also contribute to acknowledgement of
the traditional ancesteral lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation.

The project objectives are:
• To commission a suite of Aboriginal murals that reflect the cultural heritage,
stories, and values of Aboriginal peoples, particularly those with connections to
the local area.
• To create a visually striking and emotionally uplifting artwork that contributes to
the healing environment of Royal Perth Hospital.
• To provide opportunities for Aboriginal artists to showcase their talents and
share their cultural perspectives with the broader community.
• To foster a sense of pride, respect, and understanding for Aboriginal cultures and
identities among hospital stakeholders and visitors.
