Description
Barbagallo Ballpark (the Ballpark), formerly known as Baseball Park and located at Tom Bateman Reserve in Thornlie is the home of baseball in WA and of the Perth Heat, Australian Baseball League (ABL) 2011 and 2012 champions.
Developed in 2004, the Ballpark was designed with initial permanent seating capacity of 500 plus additional standing room, floodlighting to Australian Standards, change rooms, toilet facilities and temporary corporate, media and catering amenities. While a Master plan was completed prior to 2004, the ideas and ambitions of Baseball WA for the future development of Barbagallo Park have changed significantly since the facility has been operational.
The Ballpark undertook an upgrade in 2007 with the permanent seating increased to 1200 with standing room allowing a capacity of approximately 4500. At this capacity there is restricted viewing for over 1000 patrons as a result of line of sight issues.
In 2010 the Ballpark underwent a further upgrade including permanent bar facilities, modest corporate facilities, an improved playing surface and some staff temporary accommodation. With the success of the Perth Heat and crowds approaching the capacity of the ballpark, several issues have been identified where the facility is deficient from an amenity and public health standard perspective. These issues include, but are not limited to; floodlighting suitable for TV coverage, increasing the permanent and temporary seating capacity, the number of permanent and temporary ablutions for the crowd capacity, ticketing and administration facilities, corporate and catering amenities, media facilities and the general level of public amenity.
The Department of Sport and Recreation is seeking to engage a suitable consultant to guide any future investment in the facility. The Master Plan is proposed to identify and address deficiencies within the facility and guide future development, while the Business Case will examine the project justification and cost implications of the proposed developments
