Fleet Base West Low Level Bridge Repairs
Details
Description
The Low Level Bridge, is 305 metres long, located at the mainland end of the causeway linking Garden Island(Fleet Base West) to the Rockingham, WA mainland. The Low Level Bridge comprises a reinforced concrete deck supported by a steel structure on steel piles, providing a two lane roadway. The abutments are reinforced concrete and steel sheet piling. There have been various repair works conducted on the Low Level Bridge since its commission in 1972, including most recently in 2007/2008, the installation of a new reinforced concrete slab overlay bonded to the existing roadway and various associated works.
The need for this project has been borne out of the accelerated deterioration of the structural steel under the bridge deck and the need to rectify these deficiencies as a matter of urgency in order to keep open the critical road link to Fleet Base West.
The repair works include reinforced concrete elements, structural steel elements, vehicle guard rail elements and ancillary elements.
