Description

Three airstrips have been established at the Abrolhos Islands, all of which fall within the HAINP and are the responsibility of DBCA to maintain to the required standards set out by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

The airstrips are all are classified as ‘Uncertified Aircraft Landing Areas’. The use of all 3 of the airstrips is limited to small, single engine aircraft that do not exceed 2000kg in daylight hours.

Aircraft Charter Operators are the primary users of the airstrips. These operators support the rock lobster & aquaculture industry, as well a small fly in/fly out tourism industry. Small numbers of private aircraft also use the airstrips.

The Works comprise maintenance of the three existing airstrips at the Abrolhos:

  • East Wallabi Island airstrip. This is 667m long x 8-9m wide. It has three aircraft parking areas Northern end (2226m2), Western side (700m2), Southern end (1300m2), and two turn-around areas at the southern (675m2) and for northern (105m2) ends.
  • Rat Island airstrip. This is 517m long x 10m wide. It has a central parking (1500m2), and two turn-around areas at the southern (550m2) and northern (720m2) ends.
  • North Island airstrip. This is 473m long and 6m wide.
