ABS Network Security Enhancement

Details

Awarded

Description

Currently the ABS has a deployment of Intrusion Detection Systems / Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS) in the gateway environment to meet Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) requirements for an external facing government network. These systems provide level 4-7 network protection against threats and monitor for unusual behaviour. These systems in conjunction with physical network separation and firewalls provide a deep level of security for the gateway and DMZ environment. This current deployment of network security does not extend into the internal network environment, where USB keys and other mobile devices are commonly introducing threats into the internal ABS environment by-passing gateway security processes.

The ABS IT environment currently consists of 3000 desktops, 500 virtual desktops and 1200 virtual servers, with a server virtualisation rate of around 96%. VMware vSphere has been the platform of choice for this virtual environment, with the server fleet primarily consisting of Windows 2003 and 2008 and desktops running Windows XP and Windows 7.
