Description
The Quod building is perhaps the most recognisable symbol of the Island’s prison era history. The Quod was erected between 1863 and 1864 and served as the main prison building on the Island during the penal era. Like much of the colonial infrastructure on the Island, the prison was constructed by the forced labour of Aboriginal prisoners. Subsequently, the Quod building was converted into a State Hostel for tourists. Later it would form part of the commercial lease for the Rottnest Lodge. Over time, these adaptations obscured the building’s original use as a prison.
In 2018 the Quod was excised from the commercial lease and returned to RIA management; it no longer serves as accommodation.
The Quod no longer serves as accommodation and its future is to be determined under Stage Two of the Wadjemup Project which will involve a Statewide consultation with Aboriginal Communities.
The Quod building is currently deteriorating and is in need of urgent heritage conservation works to conserve the building fabric. These conservation works form this request DBCARIAT6024 Quod Conservation Works
