Fremantle Station Bus Interchange Works - Radio Systems Replacement

The Radio Systems Replacement (RSR) Project is a major upgrade of the PTA’s existing radio system that will see the deployment of a new digital radio system for railway communications based on Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology. The new radio system will initially support a standards-based mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT) voice application and a broadband data capability for projects such as High-Capacity Signaling (HCS). The RSR project is currently well into the delivery phase, with two major contracts awarded to Nokia and UGL in the later stages of design, and early construction activities now underway. Project completion is expected in mid-2026. As a part of the UGL Civil works, a monopole site will be constructed at Fremantle Station and Aubin Grove Station. To facilitate these works UGL requires the bus layover bay at Fremantle Station to be utilised to facilitate day-time construction vehicle access through a fenced area and to encroach onto the bus turnaround pavement at Aubin Grove Station. As a result, the busses cannot use their current layover parking. To mitigate the lack of layover parking, the space that has been reserved for bus-lay-over will be relocated to a like-for-like situation towards the Fremantle Station Transperth Park (towards the North and not be confused with North Fremantle Station) to allow buses to turn in and park, whilst drivers take their rest breaks and then transition back into service.
