Description

The Public Transport Authority (PTA) of Western Australia (WA) operates under the Public Transport Authority Act 2003. The PTA is dedicated to the delivery of rail, bus and ferry services in the Perth metropolitan area and road coach, bus and rail services in regional WA. It also develops policies and legislation relating to these activities and provides public transport infrastructure such and rail networks, rolling stock and stations. School Bus Services (SBS) are also managed by the PTA.

SBS manages student transport assistance for regional students and students with special education needs in metropolitan areas. SBS provides bus services to over 30,000 students each school day using ‘orange’ school buses. On the whole these vehicles are owned by contractors who provide transport services for students on behalf of the State Government. Currently SBS manages 840 contracts, which are spread from Kununurra in the north to Esperance in the south of WA and all points in between.

In April 2013 the Minister of Transport announced that all wheelchair accessible orange school buses under contract to the Government would be fitted with fire suppression equipment. SBS has developed a fire suppression implementation plan to be achieved over an agreed period.

Scope of Services

  • Ordering and fitting of appropriate water mist fire suppression systems on 24 orange school buses
  • The fire suppression system will be designed to adequately extinguish a fire originating within the engine compartment.
  • The make and model of busses will vary.
  • Undertaking any additional work required to ensure that vehicles are compliant with Australian Standards and applicable Australian Design Rules (ADR’s).
  • All Work completed on individual vehicles is to be individually costed and provided to the PTA. Any work conducted of a structural nature is to be inspected and approved by an approved and appropriately qualified engineer, if required.
  • All non-structural work to be inspected and approved by an authorised PTA inspector.
