Description

With its world-famous natural features, Port Campbell National Park (PCNP) attracts over 2 million visitors annually. Popular visitor sites include Port Campbell, Gibson Steps, Twelve Apostles, and Loch Ard Gorge which offer walking tracks through coastal heath to cliff-top lookouts and access to spectacular beaches.

Under normal circumstances (pre COVID19) expected periods of highest visitor pressure are summer school holidays, Lunar New Year period and Easter. The sites within The Park that have the highest visitation are Port Campbell foreshore, Gibson Steps, Twelve Apostles, and Loch Ard Gorge.

Visitor monitoring in 2017 recorded daily peaks of over 10,000 people per day at the Twelve Apostles Visitor site. In 2018, monitoring recorded an overall increase in average daily visitors with peaks of 15,000 per day on several occasions. Estimates of peak visitation numbers post COVID19 are, at this stage, difficult to accurately predict. However, in 2023/24 we are seeing an increase in visitor numbers.

During previous Lunar New Year periods, most tour operators have a significant increase in bookings with some doubling or tripling the number of coaches operating daily. During Summer and Easter periods, domestic and international car visitation significantly increases.
