Data Processing of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Data for the Midland Line

The Network and Infrastructure (N&I) Track Branch are responsible for collection of track asset condition data to inform the identification, and planning, of maintenance and renewal activities. The Track branch along with the Rail Revitalisation Program (RRP) Project requires supplementary data as to sub-surface condition along the Midland Line, which requires the use of a specialist Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system. GPR data provides insight into sub-surface conditions inclusive of subgrade weakness, fouled ballast, and overall integrity of the track structure, to inform the requirements and prioritisation of applicable works. Processing of GPR data is a specialised field, and the accuracy of reported conditions is reliant on the knowledge the analyst holds of both the system configuration & operational parameters, in addition to appropriate interpretation of the images. The PTA seeks the provision of services, to process continuous raw GPR data (images) , and provide the processed imagery supplemented with a report that details the following: Ballast FoulingVariation in formation layer thicknessSubgrade settlementEvidence of erosion with subgradeWater pocketsWork activity recommendations of identified conditions.
