Description
Parks Victoria invites suppliers to submit a Tender for the Mount Buffalo Chalet - construction services for Heritage conservation repair and maintenance works
Mount Buffalo Chalet is located on Mount Buffalo, in the Alpine region of north-eastern Victoria, accessed via a sealed road within the Mount Buffalo National Park. The timber Chalet was designed by the Public Works Department, constructed in 1910 and extended in 1912, 1914, the 1920s and 1930s. It ranges from 2-3 storeys with a floor area of approximately 6,000m2.
Mt Buffalo Chalet is a bungalow style, timber building on a coursed random rubble plinth, with a series of hipped and gabled corrugated iron roofs, rough cast render chimneys with tapering tops and random coursed rubble bases, a decorative barge board over the main entry, decorative timber brackets supporting timber shingled, gable ends with exposed rafters and double hung, paned windows.
The Chalet is of architectural, historical and social significance to the State of Victoria and is included on the Victorian Heritage Register (H0901), regulated through the Heritage Act (2017). The extent of registration includes everything located within the identified parcel of land, including multiple buildings and structures, gardens and landscaping features.
The Chalet is of architectural significance as one of the largest alpine resort complexes in Victoria and is of historical significance for its association with the history of leisure in Victoria and the development of the Mount Buffalo National Park. It is of social significance due to its association with a section of the community in their pursuit of recreation and the development of the Mount Buffalo National Park as a year-round alpine resort for a broad cross section of the community.
Mt Buffalo Chalet is included on the National Heritage List as part of Australian Alps National Parks and Reserves, regulated through the Environment Protection & Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth.).
