Description
This Active SEM will replace and enhance the capabilities of an existing Active SEM which is old, unreliable and not suitable for examination highly radioactive specimens prepared in the IME Hot Cells.
The new Active SEM facility will allow:
•Research into the effect of radiation damage on microstructure and mechanical properties of materials to be used in future nuclear plant.
•Fulfil ANSTO’s responsibility of undertaking and reporting the outcomes of the OPAL surveillance programme; itself a requirement under the OPAL operating license.
•Support the Synroc Mo99 waste programme by examining and confirming the integrity of witness HIP cans by sectioning and polishing. Furthermore, verification “leaching” test samples can be examined.
