Provision of Site Assessment Services and Installation Services of Water Meters in the Mulgrave-Russell Management Area

The Russell-Mulgrave Rivers catchment covers an area of 1983 km2. Approximately 1137km2 of the catchment is in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Just south of Cairns, the Mulgrave Aquifer underlies all of the alluvial plain from the southern side of Trinity Inlet, under and east of Edmonton, under Greenhill and Gordonvale and under the full length of the Mulgrave River Valley from Little Mulgrave to Russell Heads.

The project objective is to site assess 225 estimated works and install an estimated 100 water meters on water entitlement holders’ works in the Mulgrave-Russell Management Area whose licence/s requires the works to be metered under the Government’s ‘Metering Water Extractions’ policy. This will involve new water meter installations and may well include replacing existing water meters that do not meet the department’s standard. Installations will involve both surface water and groundwater works.

The exact number of installations will be dependent on the outcome of the site assessments performed, and the future intentions of water entitlement holders with respect to the use of their metered entitlement.
